The UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, said at the Advisory Commission meeting in Geneva the day before yesterday that nearly half a million people, including 5,000 Palestinian refugees, fled from Lebanon to Syria.
Lazzarini added in the meeting, reviewing and warning against ending UNRWA’s role in aiding the Palestinian people, that Palestinian refugees, including those fleeing from Lebanon to Syria, are struggling to recover from the war, the economic crisis, and the devastating earthquakes. In this context, UNRWA stated that many families were forced to return to Syria despite the destruction of their homes due to the war, and they are now struggling to meet their needs in Syria.
The agency added that 1,084 Palestinian families have contacted them in Syria, and most of them are living with family members or friends in increasingly overcrowded and deteriorating conditions.
Their social and economic suffering has also doubled, and their food security situation has deteriorated. The UNRWA had previously announced that it had registered 278 Palestinian children displaced from Lebanon in its schools in Syria, in addition to providing them with health, psychological, and social support.
