The Syrian Palestinian Taha Khattab, who lives in Sweden, has emerged as one of the most influential people in the city of Gothenburg, ranking 97th on the list of the most influential people for 2024, according to the classification of the newspaper “Göteborg Boston”.
Taha Khattab, who came to Sweden at the age of 16 from the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in the Syrian capital Damascus, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sociology and human rights at the University of Gothenburg. His name became known as the official spokesperson for the student camp that was held for more than six months in front of the main building of the University of Gothenburg.
Despite its removal by police decision in November 2024, the camp left a significant impact in academic and community circles.
Speaking to the Swedish Arabic-language newspaper Alkompis, Khattab said about his selection on the list:
“I do not consider this a personal achievement, but rather a victory for everyone who seeks to raise the voice of the Palestinian cause.
We will continue to deliver our message to the world, and you will see us next year in many important events in Sweden to talk about the struggle of the Palestinian people.
”Khattab stressed the importance of the student movement in supporting the Palestinian cause, noting that “the student movement in Gothenburg is an integral part of the global struggle to support the Palestinians in their resistance to the occupation.
We seek to unify our efforts with international parties to enhance this support. Although Gothenburg University did not respond to the students’ demands to sever ties with Israeli educational institutions, the student demonstration in the Vassblatsen area, where the camp was held, succeeded in drawing the attention of the city’s residents to what is happening in Gaza and sparking discussion about the Palestinian cause.
