The Military Operations Department of the new Syrian government announced the arrest of the Palestinian-Syrian Nidal Nimer Yousef in the Jdeidet Artuz al-Balad area, who is considered one of the most prominent leaders of the Shabiha affiliated with the former regime. According to sources, Yousef is considered a prominent figure in leading armed groups, having held leadership roles in several formations, including the “Free Palestine Movement” and the “National Guard”, and most recently joining the ranks of the Fourth Division.

Reports indicated that Yousef was responsible for recruiting Shabiha of various nationalities, and information indicates that his groups included no less than 75 fighters, most of whom were young men, a large number of whom were killed during battles that supported the continuation of the rule of the former regime.

Yousef participated in battles on several fronts, most notably Yarmouk Camp, Palestine Camp, Zabadin, and Al-Maliha, which makes him a wanted figure by the judiciary in cases related to war crimes and violations that accompanied the Syrian revolution.

In a related context, the Operations Department continues its efforts to pursue remnants of the former regime and its supporting militias, where it was recently able to arrest six people in the Al-A’edeen camp in Homs, in addition to arresting two people in the Al-Nayrab camp. The sources confirmed that no arrests have been recorded in the rest of the camps during the recent period.

These steps come within the framework of the ongoing efforts to implement justice and hold accountable those responsible for crimes committed during the years of conflict, within the vision of the new government to achieve security and stability in the country.
