Khan Dunoun Camp: Memorandum Demands Urgent Reforms in Aid and Health from UNRWA

Action Group – Rural Damascus

A delegation from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) in Khan Dunoun camp delivered an official memorandum to the UNRWA Director of Services in the area, Jihad Mahmoud. The memorandum expressed residents’ dissatisfaction with the poor level of services and called for tangible reforms to the aid distribution mechanism and improved health and living services. This move reflects the escalation of popular demands within the Palestinian camps in Syria.
During the meeting, held in Khan Dunoun camp in rural Damascus, the delegation reviewed the difficult economic and social conditions facing Palestinian refugees, stressing the need to expedite the distribution of financial and in-kind aid and amend the current criteria, which have been described as “unfair” and do not take into account the increasing incidence of poverty.
In its memorandum, the delegation also emphasized the importance of providing appropriate treatment for chronic diseases, which have become an additional burden on residents in light of the decline in health and education services and the worsening unemployment within the camp.
This move is a further indication of the escalating popular anger within the Palestinian camps in Syria, which are suffering from a steady decline in the services provided by UNRWA, amid rising poverty and unemployment rates, and the absence of radical solutions that guarantee a minimum standard of living for refugees.
