Palestinian students from Syria appeal to save their right to education.

Hundreds of Palestinian students who have fled Syria to Lebanon are living in a state of anxiety and anticipation, facing the prospect of being denied the opportunity to pursue higher education. Their inability to renew their legal residency permits puts their academic future at risk and threatens them with expulsion from Lebanese universities and institutes.

According to activists in Beirut, the crisis is worsening in the absence of any official initiative, from either the Palestinian or Lebanese sides, to address the situation of these students who fled the horrors of war in Syria. They find themselves trapped in a maze of bureaucracy and neglect.

Activists confirm that these students’ residency permits have been frozen for a long time, and there are no clear mechanisms or new decisions issued by the Lebanese General Security allowing them to be renewed. This precarious legal situation not only exposes them to the risk of expulsion from their educational institutions but also threatens them with arrest or deportation.

In a desperate attempt to move this issue forward, activists revealed that they sent a direct message to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during his recent visit to Lebanon, urging him to urgently intervene to save the future of these students and to communicate with the relevant Lebanese authorities to find a sustainable solution to this dilemma. One parent said, “We are extremely concerned about the future of our children, who may be denied the opportunity to obtain their educational certificates due to this ongoing problem with no clear solutions.”

This crisis has been exacerbated by the difficult living conditions faced by Palestinian refugees from Syria in Lebanon, who face increasing challenges related to residency, work, and education.

Observers believe that this crisis once again highlights the fragility of the situation of Palestinian refugees from Syria in Lebanon and their deprivation of their most basic rights, foremost among them the right to education, amid the intersection of official neglect and restrictive laws that exacerbate their suffering.
