Al-Husseiniyah Camp: Shortage of Teaching Staff in UNRWA Schools

Rural Damascus – Action Group

The education sector in Al-Husseiniyah Palestinian refugee camp, south of Damascus, continues to face recurring challenges at the beginning of each academic year, due to inadequate school infrastructure and insufficient capacity to accommodate the growing number of students.

Several residents reported that UNRWA schools in the camp suffer from overcrowding, lack of resources, and a shortage of teaching staff ”” problems that persist annually without lasting solutions.

As the school year enters its fourth week, some schools are still experiencing a shortage of teachers, due to the expiration of last year’s contracts and delays in recruitment procedures for replacements. This has negatively affected the learning process and deprived students of certain classes, such as physical education.

Parents have called on UNRWA to expedite the appointment of new staff and to implement a hiring system that allows for recruitment during the summer break, in order to avoid repeating the same problem each academic year.
