The National Commission for Missing Persons in Syria announced the signing of a Declaration of Principles for Joint Cooperation with the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the International Independent Institute on Missing Persons (IIMP). The signing took place during an official event held at the Golden Mezzeh Hotel in Damascus, attended by representatives from several national and international organizations and media outlets.

The declaration aims to strengthen technical and institutional cooperation between the Commission and international mechanisms concerned with the issue of missing persons. This cooperation is part of a joint effort to uncover the fate of all missing and forcibly disappeared persons in Syria and to guarantee the rights of their families to know the truth and achieve justice, regardless of the victims’ backgrounds or the circumstances of their disappearance.

The signatories affirmed their commitment to the principles of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, emphasizing the need for the families of the missing to be at the heart of the national process and the importance of working according to the principles of neutrality, independence, and impartiality.

This collaboration represents a new step towards unifying national and international efforts and strengthening local capacities in the areas of research, documentation, and legal support, contributing to the consolidation of the values of justice, dignity, and truth, and paving the way for building a transparent national process that seeks sustainable peace based on respect for human rights.
