UNRWA: International Community is Responsible for Providing Aid for Palestinian Refugees and there is No Decision to Postpone the School Year

Deputy commissioner of UNRWA, Sandra Mitchell, said on Monday morning, that “any decision to postpone the new school year is not taken yet, and that decision would only issue by the Commissioner-General, which will decided in accordance with the financial status of UNRWA.”
Mitchell pointed out that UNRWA Commissioner-General is in contact with all parties in order to provide the necessary financial support, as he visited some foreign and Arab countries, and will talk in front of the Arab foreign ministers in Cairo.
Saying that the responsibility of international community is to provide support until a complete solution to the refugee issue will be found, and added that UNRWA has priorities in case of suspending support, and humanitarian issues in accordance with their order will govern its work in the coming period in light of the financial crisis.
She also mentioned that they take austerity measures such as lay off 85% of the foreign workers who work with contracts and development of some programs, as she confirmed that the decision to postpone the school year whether or not to take before or after the middle of this month, adding: “We will raise our voices until we get the funding, we open the schools on time».
