The European Union approved yesterday a package of proceduresconsisting of ten points to reduce the tragedies of the sinking migrants across the Mediterranean Sea. The EU said it would strengthen the campaign of Coast Guard, which named” Triton “, as wellas, it will also seek to obtain a military mandate to destroy the human traffickers boats because of the shooting on the rescuers and their boats, which threatens their lives.
The European Commissioner, Federica Mogerena commented on the ten procedures, “Itis a strong response from the European Union about these tragedies, and shows a new ability to deal with the new situation and the availability of political will.”
The ten points included improving rescue procedures, prosecuting human traffickers, and doubling the financial resources, accelerating the decision on the asylum claims within two months of submission, taking immigrants fingerprints, registering them, and providing them with incentives to return to their homelands.
That meeting comes with receiving new distress calls from boats carrying migrants in order to reach the European coasts from Libya.
The Italian police have arrested two survivors of the disaster that occurred last Sunday off Libya, two Tunisians, and a Syrian, to discover later that the first is the ship’s captain. For his part, Attorney General Assistant, Rocco Liguori, said,”The Tunisian captain faces charges of negligence that caused the deaths of hundreds of people,in addition to the charges of human trafficking.”
It is worth mentioning that the Italian Coastguard said on 19/4/2015 that about 700 immigrants have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea when the ship they were traveling near the Italian island of Lampedusa overturned while trying to reach Europe, as the Coast Guard confirmed that they were able to save only(28) refugees. The ship is presumed to have capsized when the passengers went to one side at the approach of a merchant ship towards them.
