Damascus and its countryside account for more than half of the Palestinian casualties in Syria.

The Action Group – Syria

The comprehensive statistical report, “The Painful Harvest,” issued by the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria, revealed that the majority of Palestinian victims were concentrated in the Syrian capital, Damascus, and its countryside. The two governorates accounted for more than half of the total Palestinian casualties during the war years.

According to the figures included in the report, between March 2011 and December 2024, Damascus Governorate alone recorded 1,531 victims, while the Damascus countryside recorded 1,233. Combining the two figures, the total number of victims in the two governorates reached 2,764, representing 55.6% (more than half) of the total number of Palestinian victims, which amounted to 4,965.

Yarmouk Camp: The largest percentage of victims

In a detailed analysis of the spatial distribution within the governorates, the Yarmouk camp in Damascus emerges as the epicenter of the tragedy, shockingly so. Residents of the camp alone constitute 32% of the total number of victims in all of Syria””1,596 out of 4,965, including 194 women. This means that the number of victims in Yarmouk camp alone exceeds the number of victims in most other Syrian governorates combined.

Damascus countryside camps in the forefront

In addition to Yarmouk, camps in the Rif Dimashq governorate were also the scene of large numbers of casualties. Khan al-Shih camp ranked second after Yarmouk in Syria, with 315 victims, while Sayyida Zeinab camp ranked fourth with 272 victims.

Analysis: Why Damascus and its countryside?

The report indicates that this high concentration of casualties in the capital and its countryside is not random, but rather the result of several factors:

1. Population density: Damascus and its countryside contain the largest concentration of Palestinian refugees in Syria, in camps such as Yarmouk, Khan al-Shih, and Sbeineh.

  2. Main conflict hotspots: This area was the scene of the fiercest battles and longest sieges, in Yarmouk camp, which became a symbol of suffering after its siege and near-total destruction.

  3. Direct targeting: These camps were subjected to intense shelling by various parties and were sites of ground clashes and direct military operations.

With these figures, the report provides stark statistical evidence that the Syrian capital and its suburbs were the bloodiest arena, where Palestinian refugees paid a heavy price, transforming their supposedly “safe haven” camps into mass death traps.
