Syria. UNRWA: 104 schools open their doors to more than 50,000 Palestinian students.

Damascus | Action Group:

In light of the enormous challenges facing Palestinian communities in Syria, and with reconstruction and return efforts continuing in camps like Yarmouk, education remains the cornerstone of ensuring the future of young generations

At the start of the 2025-2026 school year in Syria, UNRWA announced that more than 50,000 Palestinian refugee students are receiving education in its schools in cities and communities across Syria. UNRWA stated that it currently operates 104 schools providing basic education to Palestinian students, providing a safe haven for children to learn and regain some of their normal lives.

The agency’s role is not limited to academic education, but extends to include building future skills. Approximately 1,900 male and female students are enrolled in its vocational training programs. These programs aim to provide young people with the necessary technical and professional skills to prepare them for a future in a challenging job market.

In its announcement, the Agency affirms its continued provision of these essential services, and that supporting education is an investment in the resilience and future of Palestine refugees in Syria. The educational process in Syria faces difficulties due to overcrowding, cramped classrooms, the failure to restore destroyed schools, and the lack of qualified teaching staff. This includes schools in Yarmouk camp, which suffers from neglect, overcrowding, and a lack of qualified staff. The Agency has only been able to renovate one school, despite having 28 UNRWA schools.
