UNRWA: Ready to work with Damascus to protect Palestinian rights

Brussels | Action Group

UNRWA declared its readiness to work with the Syrian authorities to protect the rights of Palestinian refugees in Syria. This was stated by UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini at the Brussels Conference on Syria held last March.

In his speech, Lazzarini said that as Syria’s future takes shape, UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, remains a lifeline for a highly vulnerable and needy community: Palestine refugees in Syria and those who have fled to Jordan and Lebanon.

He emphasized UNRWA’s position that it stands ready to work with the Syrian authorities and international partners to protect the rights of Palestine refugees and enhance access to basic services; and promoting social and economic inclusion in support of peace and stability.

The Commissioner-General added that Syria is inclusive, and the rights of all people must be protected, including Palestine refugees. The Agency provides basic public services to more than 400,000 Palestine refugees registered in Syria.

He noted that more than 90 percent of them live below the poverty line and rely on emergency cash assistance provided by UNRWA to meet their basic needs. More than 50,000 girls and boys receive education in more than 100 UNRWA schools.

Lazzarini noted UNRWA’s urgent need for funding to maintain its current services and keep pace with the political transition in Syria, in addition to clarifying its role within a time-bound political process addressing the Palestinian issue.
