Local sources in Yarmouk Camp reported welcome news for residents of the 8th of March neighborhood within the camp, concerning plans to remove rubble. This paves the way for reconstruction and facilitates the return of residents, sending a clear message that the neighborhood will remain and will not be demolished.

Lawyer Nour al-Din Salman, head of the Union of Palestinian Jurists in Syria, stated that the complete removal of debris from the 8th of March neighborhood has been decided upon, as part of a plan fully funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation and coordination with relevant Syrian authorities.

This step carries a strong and important message for the residents: “The 8th of March neighborhood will remain and will not be demolished under any circumstances,” and it facilitates the return of residents and property owners to their homes.

In addition to rubble removal, a parallel initiative is underway to improve infrastructure. A new electrical transformer will be installed next to the Hajar al-Aswad municipality building, and it is expected to provide the neighborhood with electricity soon.

Those responsible for delivering this good news called on property owners in the 8th of March neighborhood to take advantage of this positive development by cleaning, repairing, and rebuilding their homes, returning to them, and reopening their shops as much as possible.

The neighborhood is expected to witness a surge in activity and a rise in property prices following these positive developments in rehabilitation and return efforts.

It is worth noting that the majority of residents of the 8th of March neighborhood had obtained security clearances from the former regime to return to their homes, but they were unable to do so due to the deplorable condition of the neighborhood, which persists to this day. There are calls for urgent intervention to address this problem, including the provision of specialized teams to remove rubble and improve the neighborhood’s infrastructure, particularly in the areas of water, electricity, and sanitation. This announcement offers a glimmer of hope for the residents to return.
